Insurance & getting started

What is The Breastfeeding Shop?

We are a highly rated breast pump provider that helps moms get free pumps and supplies through their insurance. We work with many insurance providers, including TRICARE, Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and more. Once you choose a pump, you get a prescription and fill out a simple order form, and we take care of the rest for you.

Does my insurance cover a breast pump, and will I pay anything out of pocket?

For most plans, yes. Under the Affordable Care Act, most insurance plans cover a standard double electric breast pump at no cost to you. If you choose a premium or wearable model, some plans ask for a small upgrade fee, and you will always see that amount before you order. Start your order and we will confirm your exact coverage in about two minutes.

Do I need a prescription?

Yes, insurance requires a prescription, but you do not need to have it in hand. Give us your doctor’s information and we will request the prescription for you.

When can I order my breast pump?

You can start your order at any time. Most plans let you receive your pump about 30 days before your due date, and some allow it earlier. We will ship as soon as your plan allows. If you are returning to work, it helps to have your pump a few weeks beforehand so you can practice.

How does the process work?

It is simple. Choose your pump, share your insurance and doctor’s details, and we verify your coverage and request your prescription. Once everything is approved, we ship your pump to you for free. Our team handles the paperwork with your insurer so you do not have to.

Which insurance plans do you accept?

Many, including TRICARE, Aetna, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, UnitedHealthcare, and a range of state Medicaid programs. Start your order and we will confirm your specific plan’s coverage.

What if my insurance does not cover a pump?

If your plan does not cover a pump, or covers only part of one, we will let you know your options, including any upgrade or self-pay amount, before you owe anything. There are no surprise charges.

Why should I choose The Breastfeeding Shop?

We are a well known, highly rated breast pump provider, and we ship your pump and accessories right to your door. We make ordering as easy as possible and can help you contact your doctor, get a prescription, choose a pump, work with your insurance company, and add free accessories and compression garments.

Choosing your pump

What kinds of breast pumps are there?

The two main types are manual and electric. Manual pumps are hand operated, smaller, lighter, and usually cost less, but they take more effort. Electric pumps allow effortless pumping, and many models pump both breasts at once, which saves time. Depending on your insurance and prescription, you may be limited to a certain type.

How do I choose the right pump for me?

Think about how often you plan to pump, whether you are returning to work, your budget, what your insurance covers, and whether you want a hands-free or wearable option. If you are not sure which pump is right for you, contact us and we will help you compare your choices.

Can I upgrade to a premium or wearable pump, and what does it cost?

Yes. If you want a premium or wearable pump beyond what your plan covers in full, you can pay a small upgrade fee. You will see the exact amount before you place your order, with no surprises.

Can I get an Elvie pump?

The Elvie is a luxury wearable pump that requires a signed waiver and additional fees. In the United States, it may be partially covered by your insurance.

Is it safe to use a secondhand breast pump?

Using a secondhand personal pump is not recommended, since mold, bacteria, or contamination can make your baby sick. Some FDA approved hospital grade pumps are designed for multiple users, so those can be safely rented.

Shipping, tracking & returns

How much does shipping cost and how long does it take?

Insurance covered items ship free. Orders are processed within one to three business days after your confirmation email. If your order is billed to insurance, we cannot ship until your coverage is verified, usually within 48 business hours, and until we have any required prescription.

How do I track my order?

Once your order ships, we email you a tracking number, and you can also log into your account to check your status. Please allow up to 24 hours for tracking to update.

What is your return policy?

You can return eligible items within 30 days. A 20% restocking fee may apply to special or large orders. For health and safety reasons, used or opened breast pumps cannot be returned, in line with federal law.

What if my pump arrives damaged or defective?

Contact us right away if an item arrives damaged or is missing. Every pump is also covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, and we can help you reach the manufacturer for a repair or replacement.

Accessories & extras

How do I order milk storage bags?

Just fill out our accessory replacement form and we will ship your breast milk storage bags directly to you.

Can I get compression garments, pregnancy pillows, and other supplies?

Yes. Our simple form lets you order pregnancy pillows, compression garments and socks, maternity support belts, nipple shields, and an SNS feeder.

Should I get a pumping bra?

If you plan to pump regularly, yes. A hands-free pumping bra frees you up to do other things while you pump. Many moms keep two, so one is always ready when the other is in the wash.

Pumping & storing milk

When can I start pumping?

Some moms start soon after birth, especially if their baby has trouble feeding directly, since pumping can help build supply. If you are returning to work, start a couple of weeks before you go back so your body and your baby have time to adjust. Wait a little before introducing bottles to avoid nipple confusion.

How can I make pumping easier?

A few things help: use a pump that fits your needs with the right flange size, go hands-free, set a regular routine and try not to skip sessions, get comfortable with a pillow and blanket, stay hydrated and eat well, keep a photo or video of your baby nearby, and relax and breathe deeply. The more you practice, the easier it gets.

Where can I pump at work?

You need a clean, private spot where you feel comfortable. Some workplaces already have a space set up for this. If not, ask your employer or HR department about creating a private area you can use.

How long should a pumping session take?

Usually about 15 to 20 minutes with the pump running. Some moms need 30 to 40 minutes, especially early on. When the milk slows and your breasts feel drained, you can end the session.

How should I store breast milk?

Store milk in sealed bags or bottles, label them with the date, and keep them in the back of the fridge or freezer away from the door. General guidelines: room temperature up to 4 hours, back of the refrigerator 3 to 8 days (use within 4 days for best quality), and back of the freezer 3 to 6 months. Without a fridge, an insulated bag with ice packs keeps milk safe for about 24 hours.

How much milk should I store?

Start with 1 to 2 ounce increments, see how much your baby takes at once, and adjust from there. Storing in small 2 to 4 ounce portions avoids waste, since thawed milk cannot be refrozen.

How do I freeze breast milk?

Storage bags work best. Leave about an inch of room for expansion, write the pumping date on the bag, and add your child’s name if it is going to a childcare provider.

How do I safely thaw breast milk?

Thaw the oldest milk first. Move it to the fridge overnight, or run warm water over the bottle or set it in a container of warm water. Do not use boiling water or the microwave, which can burn your baby and destroy antibodies. Once thawed, use it within a couple of hours at room temperature and never refreeze it.

How do I clean my breast pump?

After each use, take the pump apart and rinse the parts under running water, then wash them in hot soapy water with a dedicated basin and brush, or run them through the dishwasher on a sanitize cycle. Let everything air dry on a clean towel, and wash your hands before handling clean parts.
